CANTON – The Rev. Gary Martin’s start off in Canton was a rocky one particular in 1994.
Just two several years soon after turning into the senior pastor at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Martin resigned.
“There were being discipline concerns,” he explained. “You will find no way in the planet you can run a church with no discipline. If I couldn’t do ministry in the way I was anticipated to, I realized I desired go away. I did not want to split the church. That was by no means my intention, nor my dream.”

Martin regarded as leaving the condition but instead launched his individual nondenominational church in 1997 with 19 constitution members. The new congregation satisfied in a member’s home just before renting place from a Seventh Working day Adventist Church, then setting up its own facility in 2003.
Subsequent weekend, the founding pastor of True Gentle Christian Ministries at 3719 Lesh St. NE will lead a 25th anniversary celebration with a gala on June 9 at the Doubletree Resort. The party will culminate with a house loan-burning ceremony and two specific worship services on June 12 at the church.
The Rev. Clevon Dukes of Farrell Pa., will converse at 10 a.m., followed by Bishop Carl E. Jones of Greensburg, Pa., at 3 p.m.
“It is really unusual for a congregation to break ground, build their own facility and pay it off,” Martin explained. “So for that to happen in Canton, and significantly a minority congregation, is specific.”
Martin has been in ministry for 40 yrs, 30 of them in Canton. Though he was elevated Baptist, he made a decision to acquire Correct Light in unique path.
“Accurate Light is a really particular worship position,” he mentioned. “We’re nondenominational. And one particular of the causes was since we preferred to be equipped to attain out to people today of many denominations. There is not a person, singular team simply because I imagine the kingdom is bigger than that.”
Teaching, not just preaching
The Flint, Mich., native is a graduate of the College of Michigan. He earned a master’s in theology the American Baptist Seminary and a doctorate in divinity from Vanderbilt University.
Martin stated educating is a central part of his ministry at Accurate Mild. In addition to pastoring, he has been an adjunct professor at Malone University and Walsh College, and not long ago wrote his to start with e book, “Let Me See Your Encounter: The Journey to Answered Prayer.”
He has been a longtime contributor to the National Baptist Convention’s Nationwide Baptist Publishing Board.
“I think you develop a church not from the outside the house in, but from the inside of out,” he stated. “Bible classes are vital. You are unable to get married in this article except if you go by premarital counseling. We believe God has honored all of that.”
Martin also credits members’ faithfulness, noting that they do not count on fundraisers. The church, he reported, is mainly financed by way of tithes and choices. For a time, they rented place to a messianic Jewish congregation.
“A person of the reasons we did that is we desired to be seriously open to any team of individuals,” he explained.
Correct Gentle also spots emphasis on outreach, which has included ministering to boys in the Indian River juvenile prison in Massillon, giveaways and household community events.
“It was almost like Thanksgiving, the way they (members) fed them,” Martin stated. “You know, one of the factors we did not want to do was leave the interior city because everyone looks to establish in the suburb when they want to develop a new facility. We believe that everyone requires to to be ministered to. This was a great possibility for us to minister to persons. We are in the men and women enterprise.”
Accomplishing things the appropriate way
At a time when church buildings are having difficulties to retain their doors open up, True Light has thrived. At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin claimed, they hosted “travel-in” companies in the parking lot and also performed expert services on line, which was a massive accomplishment.
The church has about 100 users.
“I think it really is due to the fact we did things the appropriate way,” Martin claimed. “All the things we do has to tumble under an umbrella. I simply call it mentoring men and women in accordance to Christ’s teachings. When I 1st came here, I arrived to see the influence of mentoring people according to Christ’s teachings, so nearly anything we did experienced to tumble under that umbrella. And if you couldn’t justify it by Christ, you shouldn’t do it.”
Martin also cites robust aid from customers who hold strategic positions in the local community. Part of upcoming week’s festivities will include things like a recognition of constitution users. The kitchen area will be named in honor of two of them, Maybelle Davenport and Helen Dunnivant.
While females are likely to be the greater part in quite a few church buildings, half of Legitimate Light’s associates are men.
“And sturdy adult men,” Martin said. “We stimulate them to be the priests in their houses. I have to try to direct by case in point. Sermons aren’t listened to, they are observed. If you present folks what that looks like, men and women start off to product it.”
Martin and his spouse, Debra, CEO and government director of the Pregnancy & Parenting Center, have four grownup little ones.
